A 2-minute read before the lamps are lit

Kali Yuga makes strict discipline almost impossible. Krishna knew. He told Narada: 64 rules too many? Keep five. Still too hard? Keep one: chant the Name. Even that has a catch. It works with devotees and with attention, not on autopilot.

Kartik makes it simpler still.

Most months simply pass. Kartik arrives.

Lamps blaze, Rasa Yatra, Dipavali and Govardhan Puja follow, and devotees head for Vrindavan. But the festivals are only the glow. Kartik is the month Srimati Radharani prepares your heart for Krishna’s service, and one lamp is enough to invite Her grace. Its glories fill the Padma Purana and the Hari-bhakti-vilasa.

Free grace. Why would you skip it?

Normally, grace takes effort. In Kartik, it is handed out. Picture someone giving away ₹1,000 notes at the town square. Anyone who walked past would be foolish.

And the lamp is only the start. If so little pleases the Lord, imagine what sincere devotion can bring.

What your lamp is saying

  • The flame is your pure soul.
  • The oil is devotion, which purifies it.
  • The lamp is the guru and scriptures that hold devotion steady.

Circling the Deity with a lamp says: my life and my soul are at Your service. Its golden glow also recalls Radharani’s complexion, so every lamp reminds Krishna of Her.

Why Kartik?

  • The garland of lamps. The name is tied to the unbroken line of lamps lit all month, and a lamp is offered to the Lord every day.
  • The star Krittika. The month whose full moon joins the Krittika nakshatra is Kartika.

Urja Masa: Her month of energy

Not nuclear energy. Devotional energy. Krishna is the shaktiman. Radharani is His shakti. This is Her month.

Krishna’s own month is Margashirsha, the one right after Kartik. In the Bhagavad Gita (10.35) He says, masanam margashirsho ’ham: among months, I am Margashirsha. Radharani is even more merciful than Krishna. Grace is Her department.

What does She give? Not a better job or a smoother household. She gives seva-bhava, the mood of service. First Radha prepares the servant. Then the Lord is served.

Damodara Masa: bound by love

Dama is rope, udara is belly. Yashoda’s rope kept falling short, until Radharani’s love joined it. It is Radha who binds Krishna. So we sing the Damodarashtakam, which honors Her as His beloved, and offer a lamp every day. The Padma Purana (Satyavrata Muni and Narada) says it brings the Lord’s pure love.

A vow is tested in the dark

The Kartik sankalpa: in happiness or distress, in heaven or hell, I will serve Krishna, even if He never answers.

Nobody tests a vow in comfort. It is tested when life turns hard, and the strength to keep it comes from Radharani. Her mercy often arrives with problems, because without difficulty, no one becomes strong. Sankalpa is just another word for shraddha, faith, the first step on the path that ends in prema, pure love.

This Kartik, do this

  • Offer a lamp every day and sing the Damodarashtakam.
  • Join devotees. The Name works best in their company. Short on time? Even 10 minutes at a community lamp offering counts.
  • Chant more. Try 25 rounds instead of 16, within your capacity.
  • Read the Srimad-Bhagavatam and the glories of Krishna.
  • Hear and chant His glories. This waters the creeper of devotion.
  • Take a vow against one obstacle in your bhakti.
  • Serve, give, and guard against offences to the Lord and Vaishnavas.
  • Sing the Gopi Gita with humility. These are the gopis’ feelings, not ours. Pray: please reduce the lust in my heart.
  • Reach Vrindavan if you can. If not, purify your heart. That heart is Vrindavan.

Purpose over menu

The aim of the Kartik vow is to reduce sense gratification, not to change its menu. Give up tea but crave the same pleasure in another cup, and the addiction is alive. Know why a rule exists, and you can follow it intelligently. A stepping stone is fine, but it is not the destination. In the Gita, the Lord likens rules to a well: once the great reservoir flows, the well has served its purpose.

The month in one breath

Kartik is Radharani’s month. One lamp invites Her grace. Light it, take your resolution, and begin. May this Kartik make you braver, purer and more tender toward the Lord’s service.
